Price drivers
Why does size affect price so much?
A 255/35 R20 can cost three times what a 195/65 R15 does, even in the same brand and tier. Three things drive that gap.
- 01More material. Bigger tyres use more rubber, more steel belt, more reinforcement.
- 02Higher speed ratings. A V or Y-rated tyre is engineered for sustained high-speed use, which costs more to test and certify.
- 03Lower production volumes. Specialist sizes for sports cars or large SUVs sell in much smaller quantities than 205/55 R16, so unit economics are worse.

SUV and 4x4 tyre pricing
SUVs are now the fastest-growing segment in the UK. Tyres for them cost more than buyers expect, partly because of size and partly because they often need higher load ratings.
