Save money

How to save money on tyres

Ten ways UK drivers can cut tyre spend without compromising safety. The first three together typically take 25-40% off your replacement bill.

01

Buy online, fit locally

Saves £15-30%

Online retailers (Blackcircles, Tyre Shopper, Asda Tyres) consistently undercut high-street chains by 15-30%. They deliver the tyre to a partner fitter near you. Search online, order, book a fitting slot, turn up. Most include fitting, balancing and disposal in the headline price.

02

Buy in pairs or full sets

Saves 10-20% on sets

Most retailers offer 10-20% discount on sets of 4. Always replace in pairs (same axle) for even grip and stability. Never mix different brands or models on the same axle.

03

Mid-range usually beats budget on cost-per-mile

12,000 more miles

A £50 budget tyre lasts roughly 18,000 miles, around 0.28p/mile. A £90 mid-range lasts roughly 30,000 miles, around 0.30p/mile. The 2p per 100 miles is negligible. The mid-range gives you 12,000 more miles, better wet grip, and fewer fitting trips.

04

Time the purchase

Saves 5-15% off-peak

January and August-September are typically cheapest. October-November is the worst (pre-winter rush). Black Friday tyre deals at Halfords and Blackcircles can be significant. Avoid bank holiday weekends, when garages are busiest.

05

Stack a cashback site

Saves 2-5%

TopCashback and Quidco offer 2-5% back on Blackcircles, Halfords and ATS Euromaster purchases. On a £400 set of tyres, that is £8-20 back. Free money if you were buying anyway.

06

Maintain tyre pressure monthly

Doubles tread life

Under-inflated tyres wear the edges, over-inflated wear the centre. Either way, you halve the tyre life. Correct pressure also saves 3-5% fuel. Top tip: most petrol stations have free air; supermarket forecourts are quietest.

07

Get the alignment checked

Saves £100-200

Misaligned wheels can chew through the inner or outer edge of a tyre in 5,000 to 10,000 miles, halving lifespan. A £40 alignment check pays for itself many times over if it stops you replacing tyres a year early.

08

Skip run-flats if you have a spare

Saves £40-80 per tyre

Run-flats cost 40-60% more than standard tyres. If your boot has a spare wheel or a tyre repair kit, you do not need them. Many BMW and Mercedes owners can fit a space-saver and switch to standard tyres.

09

Costco for premium brands

Membership pays for itself

Costco often beats every other UK retailer on premium brands like Michelin and Continental. Membership is £35/year. A single set of premium tyres usually saves more than that. The catch: only 30 warehouses, mostly near major cities.

10

Avoid main dealer fitting

Saves 30-50% on labour

Dealers charge 30-50% more for the same tyre and the same fitting job. There is no warranty advantage on consumables. Use a chain or independent garage unless you have a specialist or warranty reason.

Worked example
