The British Standard
BS AU 159f and what it means for your tyre
UK tyre puncture repair is governed by British Standard BS AU 159f, published by BSI Group and adopted by every reputable UK tyre fitter. The standard sets out specifically what can and cannot be safely repaired, and the criteria are based on safety-tested limits of repair durability under typical UK road conditions.
The repairable zone is the central three-quarters of the tread (the "crown" of the tyre). Damage inside this zone, smaller than 6mm in diameter, with the puncturing object removed cleanly and no visible secondary damage to the inner liner, is repairable using the standard plug-and-patch method. The plug fills the hole through the tread; the patch bonds to the inside of the liner to seal the repair from inside. Both elements together form a permanent BS AU 159f-compliant repair that can run for the rest of the tyre's tread life.
The non-repairable conditions are clear. Sidewall damage (any cut, puncture, bulge or impact damage to the flexible sidewall) is not repairable because the sidewall flexes constantly under load and any patched area will fatigue and fail. Shoulder damage (the corner where tread meets sidewall) is similarly non-repairable. Any tyre that has been driven while deflated or under-inflated suffers internal liner damage from the rim cutting into the inner surface; this damage is often not visible without demounting and an inside-out inspection, which is why a tyre needing repair must always be demounted from the wheel, not plug-repaired externally.
Run-flat (RFT) tyres are a special case. The RFT design includes a reinforced sidewall that supports the car's weight when deflated, allowing up to 50 miles of driving at 50mph after a puncture. The trade-off is that running deflated even for that limited distance causes heat damage to the sidewall reinforcement layer that is not externally visible. BS AU 159f does not approve repair on tyres that have been driven flat. Most RFT punctures are discovered after at least some driving, so replacement is the standard outcome rather than repair. This is the unspoken cost of running RFT: a single puncture typically means a £150-£250 replacement rather than a £25-£40 repair.
The repair workflow at a UK chain centre or competent independent is roughly as follows. The car comes in with a flat or slow-leak tyre. The fitter demounts the tyre from the wheel and inspects both the outer tread and the inner liner. The puncture point is located, the puncturing object (typically a nail or screw) is removed, the hole is reamed clean to remove rough edges, a vulcanised plug-and-patch combination is bonded into place from inside, the tyre is rebalanced, refitted to the wheel and re-inflated to the door-jamb-sticker pressure. Total time at the bay is 25 to 40 minutes per tyre. The repaired tyre is fully roadworthy and BS AU 159f compliant.
The DIY puncture repair kits sold at Halfords (£10-£25 typical) use external plug-only repairs designed as temporary fixes to get the car to a garage. They are not BS AU 159f compliant for permanent repair because there is no inside-out inspection of the liner. Use them for emergencies but always have the tyre properly demounted and inspected afterwards.
FAQ
Tyre puncture repair, common questions
How much does a tyre puncture repair cost in the UK in 2026?+
Standard tyre puncture repair in the UK in 2026 costs £25 to £40 at the major chains (Kwik Fit, Halfords, ATS Euromaster, National Tyres). Kwik Fit offers free puncture repair for the life of the tyre on any tyre purchased from them. Independent garages run £20 to £35. Mobile puncture repair (van comes to you) is £40 to £65. Run-flat tyre repair is usually not approved under the British Standard; replacement is the safe call.
When is a tyre puncture repairable?+
BS AU 159f (the British Standard governing tyre repair) approves repair only when the puncture is within the central three-quarters of the tread, smaller than 6mm in diameter, with no sidewall damage and no secondary damage visible inside the tyre after demounting. Punctures in the shoulder or sidewall are not repairable. A repaired tyre that has been driven flat for any meaningful distance (causing internal liner damage) is also not repairable. Always defer to the fitter's on-bench inspection after demounting.
How long does a puncture repair take?+
A standard plug-and-patch puncture repair takes 25 to 40 minutes per tyre at a chain centre, including demounting from the wheel, inspection, repair and remounting. Plug-only emergency repairs (sometimes done with the tyre still on the wheel) are quicker but are not BS AU 159f compliant and should be treated as a temporary fix to get to a proper repair facility.
Can I repair a tyre puncture myself with a kit from Halfords?+
Yes, but with caveats. The £10-£25 DIY puncture repair kits sold at Halfords and Amazon use external plug-only repairs that are intended as temporary fixes to get the car to a garage. They are not BS AU 159f compliant for permanent repair, do not allow inspection of the inside of the tyre liner, and will fail the next MOT if the inspector spots the external plug. Use them to get home, then book a proper plug-and-patch repair at a garage.
Why can run-flat tyres not be repaired?+
Run-flat (RFT) tyres are designed to support the car's weight when deflated for up to 50 miles at 50mph. Once the tyre has been driven on while deflated, the internal sidewall structure (the reinforced layer that bears the load) suffers heat damage that is not visible externally. BS AU 159f does not approve repair on tyres that have been driven flat, and most RFT punctures involve at least some distance driven before the driver notices the dashboard warning. Replacement is the safe approach for RFT punctures, which is part of why RFT cars typically need a tyre replaced after a single puncture event.
Does insurance cover puncture repair cost?+
Generally no on standard motor insurance. Some breakdown cover policies (RAC, AA, Green Flag) include emergency puncture repair or roadside tyre changes as a callout benefit, with limits. Tyre-specific insurance products from chains (Kwik Fit Tyre Insurance, Halfords Tyre Warranty) cover replacement after non-repairable punctures for a small annual premium, but the maths usually does not work in the customer's favour unless tyres are routinely damaged.
